Reviews.

Blame it on Daryl Dixon or Katniss Everdeen, but we're seeing rather the rebirth of interest in the reliable bow and arrow. And Hasbro, ever one to hone-in on present occasions, isn't really ready to miss out on the trend. Forget the initial Crossbow from 1994, or perhaps the fun-but-aging Big Bad Bow. Today, we have no less than the Rebelle Pink Crush mini-crossbow, the Rebelle Guardian Crossbow, the Rebelle Heartbreaker Bow, and the recently revealed Mega Thunderbow and Rebelle Representative Bow, all set to be on shop racks next to each other in the not-too-distant future. So, naturally, it's not a surprise that Hasbro's Zombie Strike line would likewise get a bow-type item of its own, which was provided through the Zombie Strike Crossfire Bow earlier this year.

Much has currently been said about the origins of the Zombie Strike Crossfire Bow having actually likely been rooted in the Elite product, what with its angular lines and embossed "N-Strike" seal in the manage. However you understand exactly what? Who cares. It looks terrific in the Zombie Strike color design, even if it's missing out on the faux cloth-wrapped handle of other Zombie Strike products. And besides, it harmonizes the entire Zombie genre much better than the Elite theme, anyway (after all, how many modern-day battle operatives still depend on crossbows?).

Crossfire | Zombie Strike | Nerf | Battle Aesthetics aside, the Zombie Strike Crossfire Bow is basically one-half of the Nerf N-Strike Elite Rough Cut 2 x 4 "shotgun" with a single vertical column of 4 darts instead of two columns. It includes the exact same smart air restrictor system of the Rough Cut (and also the Triad) that enables it to "sense" which chambers are loaded, and only fire out of stated chambers. Unlike the Rough Cut, the Crossfire Bow just shoots one dart at a time, and it is primed by pulling back on a drawstring-equipped priming rod versus the pump-action design of the Rough Cut. It's a relatively user-friendly and intelligent system that's both easy and enjoyable to use, if not especially quick. That being stated, we did handle to resemble a Slam-fire action with the Crossfire by pulling back on the priming rod simply enough that it didn't capture the trigger mechanism, which would permit the user to sloppily fire off all 4 shots in fast succession with differing degrees of force. However pull simply a tad too far, and the trigger would catch, bringing things back to regular single-fire operation, so we don't advise this faux-Slam-fire for in-game use.

Its raison d'etre is to supply its user with a means to silently and rapidly control a challenger ... and to do so in style.

Crossfire Zombie Strike let's be truthful. The Zombie Strike Crossfire Bow isn't really about shooting ravaging volleys of darts to overwhelm a challenger. Its raison d'etre is to provide its user with a means to silently and swiftly control a challenger ... and to do so in style. Naturally, this being a Nerf blaster at its core, it's truly no more quiet or precise than any other blaster, however it sure does look fantastic in use. Speaking of which, we balanced flat, shoulder-height shot distances of nearly 45 feet, with as much as 62 1/2 feet possible at a 30-degree arc. Precision was no better or worse than the majority of other Elite blasters (which is to state, usually excellent, but typically with a minimum of one shot from each grouping drifting hugely off-course for no evident factor), and the rate-of-fire was a little over 1 dart per 2nd, with long stops briefly after all 4 darts were shot and the user needed to re-load. This being a front-load blaster, jamming was a non-issue.

From a design perspective, we really like the Zombie Strike Crossfire Bow, though it does have a few tricks. Initially, the weight of the blaster is entirely ahead of the grip, making it really front-heavy (something Hasbro accounted for with the under-barrel manage). In addition, though the blaster itself has rather a narrow body, the bow portion makes it bigger than anticipated, and therefore somewhat awkward in close-quarters combat. Still, the transparent slats in the deal with and bow arm are cool, and when coupleded with a shoulder stock from the similarly green-shaded Vortex Praxis, the overall feel is pretty badass ... it's a modern-day take on a timeless weapon that we simply cannot assist but find appealing.

Overall, this is one of those blasters that you don't buy because of its straight-out performance. You buy it because of the sensation you get from holding and using it. The visceral "pop" that you feel when introducing a dart from something with a string is cool whenever. And the intimidation aspect of staring down a challenger with this crossbow-like weapon in-hand is matched by few blasters available today. So yes, the Crossfire Bow might be a rather crass effort to grab a few sales from the growing toy bow market. But we're ok with that, due to the fact that this is a blaster that looks cool, is enjoyable to utilize, and feels like the reasonable addition to the Zombie Strike line that it is.
